First Impressions

Caspyn Cornish Dry Gin from Pocketful of Stones originated in the basement of a London pub in 2016 before relocating to Penzance. The botanical bill includes hibiscus flowers, Japanese tea, lemongrass, lemon verbena and Cornish gorse — designed to evoke the freshness and crispness of a spring Cornish morning.

Tasting

The nose delivers loads of floral hibiscus and citrus — lemon, orange, lemongrass and lemon verbena with fresh Japanese tea. On the palate, mellow and laid back — elegant waves of fresh juniper and citrus blossom, smooth and citrus-forward with well-rounded mouthfeel. The finish is long and sherbety with gorse and orris notes.

The Bottom Line

Caspyn earns a 7 for a mellow Cornish gin that prioritises elegance over intensity. The Japanese tea adds subtle freshness, and the hibiscus provides floral colour and character. Best with premium tonic and an orange twist. Also makes an excellent Negroni base.
