Hendrick's Orbium Gin

Tasting Notes

Nose

Exceedingly floral with rose, lotus blossom and earthy notes — quinine immediately evident like a gin and tonic, fruity and floral aromatics

Palate

Sweet citrus and chamomile early, wormwood as dominant bittering agent mid-palate, unmistakable quinine bitterness — floral rose with sharp tang as quinine and wormwood wash through

Finish

Quinine enduring after all other botanicals drop away — nicely bitter but never overwhelming, spicy warm lemony then bitter

Hendrick's Orbium Gin is a London Dry gin bottled at a confident 43.4%. It positions itself squarely within the London Dry tradition, and on first acquaintance, it appears to know precisely what it is.

The distillers who brought us Hendrick’s beloved cucumber and rose gin have hit on another great innovation: quininated gin. By infusing their spirit with quinine, wormwood and blue lotus blossom, Hendrick’s have created an exceptionally rounded drink that pays homage to what is often mixed with gin: tonic and vermouth.

The Verdict

I have scored this 7.7/10. It is a competent London Dry that does not disappoint, delivering the core qualities one expects from the style at a reasonable price point. A reliable choice for the home bar.

Best Served

A classic G&T — Fever-Tree Indian Tonic, 1:2 ratio, with a twist of lemon peel and nothing more. This is a gin that respects the traditional serve, and the serve should respect it in return.
