Lingering oak warmth with vanilla persistence

First Impressions

Isle of Bute Oaked Gin takes an innovative approach to the barrel-aged gin concept: rather than ageing the finished gin in barrels (which takes months), they break aged Scottish whisky barrels into wood chips and place them in the botanical basket of the still. The spirit vapour passes through the oak chips during distillation, extracting vanilla, sandalwood, and smoky notes instantly. The result is a gin with cask-aged character that hasn't actually been aged — a clever shortcut that produces remarkably convincing results.

Tasting

The nose carries oak warmth with vanilla hints. On the palate, the gin is rich and balanced with vanilla, raisins, and stonefruit from the oak — still recognisably gin with subtle hints of pine and sandalwood and warm spices with a smoky overlay. The finish lingers with oak warmth and vanilla persistence.

The Bottom Line

Isle of Bute Oaked earns a 7 for a clever innovation — whisky barrel oak chips in the botanical basket, creating barrel-aged character without the wait. The vanilla and sandalwood notes are convincing, and the gin identity is maintained. At around £38, a nod to Scotland's whisky heritage from an island gin distillery.
