Tasting Notes

Nose

Aromatic pine and angelica — musky nutty woodiness, lemon sherbet, cumin and clove spice, immediately complex

Palate

Smooth satiny texture — sharp pine juniper transitioning to mellow cooked fruit like apple and pear, mid-palate revealing complex layers of cassia cinnamon, cracked pepper, ginger, and nutmeg, the quadruple distillation producing remarkable smoothness

Finish

Herbal pine — dry and clean, the spice layers fading gradually, cumin's warmth persisting, a colonial-era London Dry with modern execution

First Impressions

Mombasa Club takes its name from the colonial-era gentleman's clubs of East Africa — places where gin and tonic was consumed as much for its quinine's anti-malarial properties as for pleasure. This premium London Dry is quadruple-distilled in a traditional copper pot still, with a botanical bill that includes cumin and cassia alongside the more traditional juniper, coriander, angelica, and clove.

Tasting

The nose is aromatic pine and angelica with musky woodiness, lemon sherbet, and cumin-clove spice. On the palate at 41.5%, smooth satiny texture: sharp pine juniper transitions to mellow cooked fruit, then complex layers of cassia cinnamon, cracked pepper, ginger, and nutmeg on the mid-palate. The quadruple distillation produces remarkable smoothness. The finish is herbal pine — dry and clean.

The Bottom Line

Mombasa Club earns a 7 — a London Dry with genuine spice complexity. The cumin is the distinguishing feature: it adds a warm, savoury character that connects this gin to the East African spice trade that inspired its name. The quadruple distillation ensures smoothness without muting the botanicals. Best in a classic G&T with Indian tonic and a wedge of lime. At £28, excellent value for a gin of this complexity.
