Nose

Fragrant with heather tip, rosehip and elderflower leading — dark and aromatic with gothic depth

Sweet plum and vanilla followed by a kick of pepper dulse with powerful coastal flavours — rich, heady and juniper-forward with a slight bite

Finish

Pleasantly spiced — the coastal pepper dulse fading to warm vanilla and dark fruit

First Impressions

The Demeter Edition is Whitby Distillery's gothic creation, inspired by the ship that carried Count Dracula to Whitby in Bram Stoker's novel. Seventeen botanicals include plum (a nod to a bat's favourite fruit), pepper dulse seaweed from the coast, rosehip, hibiscus and pink pepper. It honours the Demeter's perilous voyage with coastal botanicals and dark fruit character.

Tasting

The nose is fragrant with heather tip, rosehip and elderflower leading — dark and aromatic. On the palate, sweet plum and vanilla are followed by a kick of pepper dulse with powerful coastal flavours. Rich, heady and juniper-forward with a slight bite. The finish is pleasantly spiced with coastal pepper dulse fading to warm vanilla and dark fruit.

The Bottom Line

Whitby Demeter earns a 7 for a gin with genuine story and substance. The seventeen botanicals create gothic complexity — plum, pepper dulse and rosehip make it unlike any other gin in the range. A Craft Gin Club Gin of the Month selection, and the Dracula connection adds charm to an already interesting spirit.
