Whitley Neill has built a reputation as one of the UK's most prolific flavoured gin producers, and their Blood Orange expression sits squarely in the sweet spot of the range — accessible, vibrant, and unapologetically fruit-forward. At 41.3% ABV, it sits just above the minimum threshold for gin, which tells you something about the intent here. This is a bottle designed to charm, not to challenge.

Style & Character

As a flavoured gin, the blood orange does the heavy lifting. The citrus character is the defining feature — think Sicilian blood oranges with their distinctive bittersweet edge, layered over a juniper base that plays more of a supporting role than a leading one. That's the trade-off with this category. You gain immediate drinkability and broad appeal, but you lose some of the botanical complexity that makes craft gin so compelling.

The Verdict

At £26.95, this is fair value for a flavoured gin from a well-known brand. It does exactly what it sets out to do — deliver a bright, citrus-led spirit that works brilliantly in long drinks and won't intimidate anyone new to gin. Where it falls slightly short is in depth. I'd love to see more botanical backbone beneath the orange, something herbal or spiced to give it another dimension. It's a crowd-pleaser, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it stops just short of being truly memorable. I'm giving it a 7.3 out of 10 — a solid, reliable pour that earns its place on plenty of shelves without quite reaching the top tier.

Best served: In a tall glass over ice with premium tonic, a wheel of dehydrated blood orange, and a sprig of rosemary. For something more adventurous, try it in a Negroni twist — equal parts blood orange gin, Cocchi Rosa, and Campari. The orange on orange layers beautifully, and the bitterness keeps it honest.
