Heritage & Distillery

Cariel has built its reputation almost entirely on the strength of this single product — a vanilla vodka that, in the considered opinion of this reviewer and many others, represents the benchmark against which all other vanilla vodkas should be measured. The use of natural vanilla extract rather than the synthetic vanillin that plagues cheaper alternatives is immediately apparent in both the aromatics and the flavour, and the Swedish wheat base provides a clean, smooth foundation that allows the vanilla to express itself with clarity and conviction.

Production & Tasting

Triple-distilled from Swedish wheat before the addition of natural vanilla extract, Cariel presents on the nose with rich, authentic vanilla pod aromas, cream, and a gentle butterscotch sweetness. The distinction between natural and synthetic vanilla is immediately obvious — this smells of real vanilla beans, not of vanilla-scented candles, and that authenticity pervades the entire drinking experience.

On the palate, Cariel is luxuriously smooth, with vanilla bean flavour of genuine quality, cream soda sweetness, and excellent integration between the flavouring and the wheat spirit base. At 37.5% ABV, the lower strength is well-suited to the sweet vanilla profile, and the overall balance is exemplary — sweet without being cloying, flavourful without being overwhelming. The finish is medium-long, with natural vanilla lingering alongside gentle warmth.

Verdict

Cariel Vanilla is the vanilla vodka against which all others should be judged. The natural vanilla extract is of superb quality, the wheat base is clean and well-made, and the integration of flavouring and spirit is seamless. It makes a cracking White Russian — indeed, it may be the definitive White Russian ingredient — and it is warmly recommended to anyone with even a passing interest in vanilla vodka. Outstanding at this price point.
