Heritage & Distillery

Ketel One's heritage is extraordinary even by the standards of a spirits industry rich in history — the Nolet family have been distilling in Schiedam, Netherlands, since 1691, making theirs one of the longest continuously operating family distilleries in the world. The brand takes its name from Distilleerketel #1, the original copper pot still that remains in use at the distillery and that plays a central role in the production of the vodka. Ten generations of the Nolet family have overseen production, and the current steward, Carolus Nolet Sr., brings both ancestral knowledge and a commitment to innovation that has kept the brand relevant across centuries.

Ketel One's arrival in the UK market in 1999, following extraordinary success in the United States, introduced British drinkers to a vodka of genuine distinction — one whose quality and price point have since made it a fixture behind the best bars in the country.

Production & Tasting

The production process is distinctive — wheat spirit is first distilled in modern column stills before a portion is redistilled in the original copper pot still, and the two distillates are blended to achieve the desired balance of purity and character. This dual-distillation approach is central to Ketel One's identity, producing a spirit that is both clean and characterful.

On the nose, Ketel One is crisp and clean, with citrus, white pepper, and a distinctive honeyed sweetness that is the signature of the pot still redistillation. The palate is silky smooth with a crisp, dry character, gentle citrus, and a refined, almost gin-like botanical hint that adds unexpected complexity. The finish is long and clean, with a warming peppery close and excellent persistence.

Verdict

Ketel One is one of the finest vodkas in its price bracket — at £27.25, it offers a quality of spirit and depth of character that many vodkas at twice the price cannot match. The 330-year heritage is not merely a marketing narrative but a genuine influence on the production, and the dual-distillation approach produces a vodka of distinctive quality. Emphatically recommended.
