Tasting Notes

Nose

Crisp and clean, with fresh green apple, white flowers and a faint mineral quality. There is a purity here that speaks to the organic credentials.

Palate

Silky and refined, with soft grain sweetness, a touch of almond and gentle herbal undertones. The brief oak contact adds subtle complexity.

Finish

Clean and elegant, with a dry mineral close and the faintest hint of vanilla from the cask.

Hven is a tiny island in the Öresund strait between Sweden and Denmark, and its distillery — one of the smallest in Scandinavia — produces spirits of remarkable quality. This organic vodka serves as the base for the house's gin and aquavit, but it is a thoroughly accomplished spirit in its own right.

The production is unconventional. After column distillation, the spirit is diluted to 55% and briefly aged in oak casks before being brought down to bottling strength. This fleeting contact with wood adds a subtle complexity that sets it apart from the crowd — a faint vanilla warmth and a gentle rounding of the edges that is barely perceptible but undeniably effective.

On the nose, there is a crystalline purity — green apple, white flowers, and a mineral quality that suggests the island's unique terroir. The palate is silky and refined, with soft grain sweetness and delicate almond and herbal notes. Everything is understated and balanced, nothing shouts.

At fifty centilitres, the bottle is modest in size but generous in character. This is a vodka for contemplative sipping, ideally alongside a plate of pickled herring and dark rye bread. A genuine artisan spirit from a distillery that deserves far wider recognition.
