Tasting Notes

Nose

Floral violet and lavender with subdued juniper and lemon — strongly perfumed with lavender, primrose, jasmine, blueberry, plum, and night-scented flowers

Palate

Floral and spicy with soft violet blossom enlivened by black pepper and cardamom — green cucumber and sweet green pepper, citrus present without overpowering, juniper forward enough for Martinis

Finish

Long floral with peppery spice — rose-like florality becoming unshakeable

First Impressions

Hendrick's Lunar was inspired by Master Distiller Leslie Gracie's experience in her botanical garden on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland at night — the flowers that bloom after dark, the moonlit aromas, the mysterious quality of botanicals in darkness. Rather than highlighting a specific ingredient, Lunar evokes a moment — the nighttime garden. Limited edition, launched 2020.

Tasting

The nose is strongly perfumed — floral violet and lavender with subdued juniper and lemon, night-scented flowers including primrose and jasmine, with hints of blueberry and plum. On the palate, floral and spicy with soft violet blossom enlivened by black pepper and cardamom — green cucumber and citrus present without overpowering, juniper forward enough for Martini enthusiasts. The finish is long and floral with peppery spice and rose-like notes.

The Bottom Line

Hendrick's Lunar earns an 8 for capturing the mystery of a moonlit botanical garden in gin form. The night-scented flower concept is evocative and the execution sophisticated. At around £35, a limited edition Hendrick's that rewards those who drink under the stars. Best in a G&T.
