If there is a single gin that can lay claim to the Navy Strength designation with genuine historical authority, it is Plymouth. The Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth was the official supplier of gin to the Royal Navy for over a century, and the Navy Strength expression — bottled at 57% ABV, the proof at which gin could be spilled on gunpowder without extinguishing it — is a direct descendant of the spirit that accompanied British sailors across every ocean.

This is not merely a stronger version of Plymouth's standard gin. While the botanical recipe is the same, the increased alcohol concentration changes the way those botanicals express themselves, amplifying certain notes and revealing others that are hidden at 41.2%. It is, in effect, a different gin — one that takes the Plymouth template and turns the volume up, without distortion.

On the Nose

The nose is an intensified version of Plymouth's characteristic profile. Juniper is more assertive — still rounded and smooth rather than sharp, but with a depth and resinous quality that the standard bottling hints at without fully delivering. The citrus is more vivid, with orange peel taking precedence over lemon. Cardamom spice is more pronounced, adding an almost incense-like quality, and there is a richness to the overall aromatic profile that suggests concentration rather than mere strength.

The Palate

The palate is magnificent. The entry is bold and full-bodied, with the higher ABV delivering a mouthfeel of extraordinary richness — oily, viscous, and thoroughly coating. Juniper is powerful but never harsh, carrying the same smooth, rounded character that defines Plymouth but at a higher intensity. The spice notes expand — cardamom, a touch of black pepper, warm coriander — creating a warmth that builds through the mid-palate. The citrus cuts through beautifully, preventing the gin from becoming heavy.

What is most impressive is the balance. At 57%, one might expect alcoholic heat to dominate. It doesn't. The botanicals are so well-integrated and the distillation so precise that the alcohol feels like a vehicle for flavour rather than a sensation in itself.

The Finish

The finish is long, warming, and complex. Juniper persists deep into the aftertaste, joined by lingering cardamom spice and a dry, slightly bitter note from the angelica root. The warmth is substantial but controlled, building slowly rather than hitting all at once. This is a finish that rewards patience — it evolves over thirty seconds or more, revealing new nuances as it fades.

In Cocktails

Plymouth Navy Strength is, quite simply, one of the finest cocktail gins ever made. In a Negroni, it transforms the drink — the gin's intensity creates perfect equilibrium with Campari and sweet vermouth, producing a cocktail of extraordinary depth. In a Gimlet, the 57% ABV ensures the gin's character survives the lime juice. And in a Pink Gin — the traditional naval cocktail of gin and Angostura bitters — it is utterly definitive.

This is the Navy Strength against which all others must be judged. It combines power with elegance, intensity with balance, and historical authenticity with contemporary relevance. If you own only one Navy Strength gin, this should be it.
