Diplomático Single Vintage is a world away from the brand's popular Reserva Exclusiva. Where the Reserva is blended, sweet, and designed for broad appeal, the Single Vintage is a pure pot still expression from a single year's distillation, aged for a minimum of twelve years in ex-bourbon casks. It is Diplomático's statement of intent — proof that the distillery can produce rum of genuine complexity and restraint when it chooses to do so.
The rum is distilled at the DUSA (Destilerías Unidas S.A.) facility in Venezuela from sugarcane honey — the same base material used for the Reserva Exclusiva. But the use of a batch pot still rather than the continuous column produces a heavier, more characterful distillate, and the single-vintage approach means that the specific character of each year's harvest is preserved rather than blended away. The twelve years in ex-bourbon oak in the Venezuelan tropics produce a spirit of remarkable concentration.
On the Nose
The nose is more restrained than the Reserva Exclusiva but considerably more complex. Rich oak and vanilla form the foundation, over which sit layers of dark chocolate, espresso coffee, and a subtle dried fruit character — fig, date, and a hint of prune. There is tobacco and leather, speaking to the extended ageing, along with warm spices — cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. The tropical fruit character is present but refined — ripe banana and a hint of orange peel rather than the lush, sweet fruitiness of the Reserva. There is a subtle smokiness and a mineral quality that add further dimensions to a genuinely complex nose.
The Palate
On the palate, the Single Vintage reveals extraordinary depth. The entry is rich but measured, with dark chocolate, toffee, and a caramel sweetness that is less overt than the Reserva. The pot still character asserts itself with a deep, earthy richness and a subtle bitterness that adds complexity. Dried fruit — fig and raisin — provide sweetness, while the oak contributes vanilla, toasted wood, and a pleasant tannic structure. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and oily, with a creamy texture that speaks to the pot still distillation. Warm spices build through the palate — allspice, cinnamon, and a growing black pepper heat.
The Finish
The finish is very long, with dark chocolate, espresso, and warm spice persisting. The oak asserts itself with a tannic dryness that provides excellent structure, while tobacco and leather add a mature, contemplative quality. There is a final note of dried fruit and honey that provides sweetness without cloying. It is a finish that evolves over several minutes and rewards patient attention.
Diplomático Single Vintage demands to be drunk neat, in a proper glass, with time to appreciate its complexity. This is not a rum for mixing — it is a rum for contemplation, for comparison with fine Cognac and aged malt whisky. It demonstrates that Venezuelan rum, freed from the sweetness that defines the popular range, can compete with the very finest expressions in the world.
