First Impressions

Foursquare has become, for many enthusiasts, the gold standard of Barbadian rum. Under the stewardship of Master Distiller Richard Seale, the distillery's Exceptional Cask Selection series has delivered one critically acclaimed release after another. The Covenant is an 18-year-old single blended rum matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at a cask strength 58% — a rum that represents some of the oldest spirit Foursquare has released in this format.

Tasting

The nose is magnificent. Dark dried fruit leads — think Christmas pudding and fig preserve — with rich oak providing a framework of polished wood and leather. Cocoa butter and vanilla pod add sweetness and depth, toasted almond contributes a nutty dimension, and there's a whisper of orange zest that lifts everything beautifully. This is a nose you could spend an evening with.

The palate is full-bodied and commanding. Dark chocolate and Christmas cake form the core, with dried fig and espresso adding complexity. Polished mahogany from the extended oak contact provides structure, warm cinnamon adds spice, and the mouthfeel is oily and luxurious. At 58%, the alcohol is remarkably well-integrated — present and assertive, but never harsh. A few drops of water release additional fruit sweetness without diminishing the intensity.

The finish is exceptionally long. Dark chocolate and oak tannins provide the backbone, dried fruit sweetness lingers, and the rum closes with a dry, dignified quality that befits its age.

The Bottom Line

The Covenant earns its 9 through sheer quality of distillation and maturation. At £150, it represents genuine value for an 18-year-old cask strength rum of this calibre. Foursquare continues to prove that Barbados belongs in any conversation about the world's finest aged spirits.
