Tasting Notes

Nose

Inviting scents of caramelised pineapple and warm treacle, with subtle notes of tobacco leaf and beeswax.

Palate

The palate is generous with toffee, vanilla custard and baked plantain, layered with subtle tobacco and leather notes. Remarkably smooth for its depth.

Finish

Long and complex, with toasted oak, dried fruit and a whisper of dark chocolate lingering on the palate.

Planteray Sealander arrives from Planteray with considerable pedigree behind it. Produced at Maison Ferrand in Barbados, this is a aged rum that speaks volumes about the quality of Caribbean and world rum production. At 40% ABV, it sits comfortably in the sweet spot for contemplative sipping, though it also brings enough character to elevate premium cocktails.

Production follows traditional methods that have been refined over generations. Maison Ferrand brings considerable expertise to the process, and the quality of the base spirit is evident from the first sip. The period spent in oak has added layers of complexity without overwhelming the inherent character of the rum.

On tasting, this rum reveals itself gradually, rewarding patience with increasing complexity. The balance between sweetness and structure is particularly well-judged, and there is a depth here that invites repeated visits to the glass. We found it most enjoyable neat or with a single cube of ice, though it would also make a rather exceptional Old Fashioned variation.

We would happily recommend Planteray Sealander to anyone seeking a quality aged rum from Barbados. It represents excellent value at its price point and demonstrates the kind of craftsmanship that continues to elevate the world of rum. Well worth seeking out.
