Probitas is the result of a remarkable collaboration between Foursquare Distillery in Barbados and Hampden Estate in Jamaica — two houses that represent very different rum philosophies united in a single bottle. Created by master blender Richard Seale, this white rum blends Foursquare's clean, elegant column still distillate with Hampden's funky, ester-rich pot still rum. The result is far more interesting than any white rum has a right to be.

What makes Probitas unusual is that both components are genuinely unaged — there is no barrel contact followed by charcoal filtration, the technique many producers use to create nominally white rums. This is spirit in its purest form, relying entirely on distillation character for its flavour.

On the Nose

The nose is vibrant and alive. The Hampden component makes itself known immediately — overripe banana, tropical fruit, and a distinct funky, estery quality that Jamaican rum lovers will recognise instantly. The Foursquare element provides balance: clean sugarcane sweetness, a light vanilla note, and a gentle citrus brightness. Together, they create an aromatic profile of surprising depth for an unaged spirit.

The Palate

On the palate, Probitas delivers beautifully. The entry is crisp and clean — sugarcane juice sweetness with a grassy, vegetal freshness. Then the Hampden funk arrives: banana, mango, and a savoury, almost olive-like quality that adds enormous complexity. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied at 47% ABV, with a richness that belies the absence of any wood ageing. There is coconut water, a touch of honey, and a mineral quality that feels authentically Caribbean.

The Finish

The finish is clean but persistent, with the tropical fruit fading first and the sugarcane sweetness and gentle funk lingering. A slight peppery warmth develops at the end, providing structure and keeping the finish from being merely sweet.

In a Daiquiri, Probitas is transformative. Where most white rums provide a neutral canvas, Probitas brings genuine character — the funk and fruit stand up to lime juice and sugar without being overwhelmed. In a Mojito, the grassy sugarcane notes harmonise beautifully with fresh mint. This is a white rum that proves the category need not be boring, and at its price point, it is an absolute steal.
