Wray & Nephew is the name most Jamaicans think of when they think of rum. The white overproof expression — that iconic yellow label at 63% ABV — is the island's national spirit, consumed in prodigious quantities across every parish. The 17 Year Old, by contrast, is something else entirely: an ultra-limited, pot still expression aged for seventeen years at Appleton Estate in the Nassau Valley, and released in tiny quantities that make it one of the most sought-after Caribbean rums in existence.

The rum is distilled on Appleton's traditional copper pot stills from a wash fermented with the estate's proprietary yeast strain — the same process that produces the white overproof, but taken in an entirely different direction through nearly two decades of tropical aging. Seventeen years in the Jamaican heat is extraordinary — the angel's share claims approximately sixty per cent of the barrel's contents, leaving behind a spirit of remarkable concentration and depth.

On the Nose

The nose is majestic. Rich, dark, and impossibly layered, it opens with deep caramel and toffee before revealing dried fruit of extraordinary intensity — fig, date, dark raisin, and prune. The Jamaican pot still character is present — the signature funky, estery quality — but it has been refined by age into something more elegant: an overripe tropical fruit quality, banana and mango, that feels sophisticated rather than raw. Oak spice is prominent — cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice — alongside tobacco, leather, and a deep, resonant coffee note. Dark chocolate and honey complete a nose of staggering complexity.

The Palate

On the palate, Wray & Nephew 17 is transcendent. The entry is thick and velvety, with dark caramel and molasses coating the tongue. The aged pot still character provides extraordinary depth: concentrated tropical fruit, a refined Jamaican funk, and an oily richness that only decades of maturation can achieve. The oak is thoroughly integrated — vanilla, coconut, butterscotch, and a firm but polished tannin structure. Mid-palate, dark chocolate, espresso, and dried fruit create layer upon layer of complexity. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and luxurious at 43% ABV.

The Finish

The finish is extraordinarily long. Dark chocolate and espresso persist for minutes, joined by tobacco, leather, and a lingering allspice warmth. The Jamaican funk makes a final, elegant appearance before a deep molasses sweetness provides the closing note. The finish evolves constantly, revealing new facets long after the spirit has gone.

Wray & Nephew 17 Year Old is among the finest rums produced anywhere in the world. It represents the absolute pinnacle of what Jamaican pot still rum can achieve when given the time, care, and patience that exceptional aging demands. This is a rum to be drunk neat, slowly, and with the reverence it deserves. Each bottle represents a vanishing treasure — the product of seventeen years of tropical aging, most of which the Jamaican heat has claimed for itself.
