There are distilleries that command immediate respect among those of us who have spent years nosing our way through Scotland's single malt landscape, and Longmorn is firmly among them. Tucked away in the heart of Speyside, this distillery has long been a favourite of blenders and independent bottlers alike — a workhorse of quality that rarely shouts but always delivers. When Gleann Mòr selected this 2009 vintage for their Rare Find series, they clearly knew what they had on their hands.

This 16-year-old single malt has been matured in a Barbadillo Oloroso sherry cask, and that detail alone should prick up the ears of anyone who appreciates what good Spanish oak can do to Speyside spirit. Barbadillo is one of the great Jerez bodegas — their Oloroso casks carry a particular richness and depth that distinguishes them from the broader sherry cask category. At 55.6% ABV, this has been bottled at cask strength, which tells me Gleann Mòr had the good sense to leave well alone. No chill filtration nonsense, no watering down to hit a number. What you get in the glass is the whisky as it matured.

What to Expect

A 16-year-old Speyside single malt at cask strength from an Oloroso sherry cask sits in rather distinguished company. The combination of Longmorn's characteristically fruity, full-bodied new make spirit with over a decade and a half in quality sherry wood should produce something with real weight and complexity. This is not a whisky for those seeking something light and floral — expect presence. The cask strength bottling will reward patience; a few drops of water will open this up considerably, and I would encourage you to take your time with it.

At £92.95, this represents genuinely good value for an independently bottled single malt of this age and strength. You would pay considerably more for an official Longmorn bottling of similar maturity, and the single cask nature of this release means every bottle carries its own particular character — once it is gone, it is gone.

The Verdict

I have a deep appreciation for independent bottlers who do their homework, and Gleann Mòr have done precisely that with this release. Selecting Longmorn spirit was a smart move — it is a distillery whose output consistently punches above its public profile. The Barbadillo Oloroso cask adds a layer of credibility and specificity that generic "sherry cask" labels simply cannot match. At cask strength and 16 years of age, this is a serious dram at a price that does not require serious justification. It earns its 8 out of 10 comfortably. My only hesitation is that limited independent releases like this tend to disappear quickly, so if this one catches your eye, I would not wait around.

Best Served

Neat, in a Glencairn, with a small jug of water on the side. At 55.6%, this absolutely benefits from a few drops to tame the cask strength and let the sherry influence breathe. Add water gradually — you can always add more, but you cannot take it back. A whisky of this calibre deserves your full attention, not an ice cube.
