It's ambitious, it's a little unusual, and at £91.25, it asks you to take it seriously. I think, on balance, it earns that.
For those unfamiliar, the Cosmo range from Mars draws malt whisky from multiple countries and marries them under one label. It's a philosophy that divides opinion — purists recoil, but I've always believed the proof is in the glass, not the passport. What matters here is whether the blending team have made something coherent, and whether that Manzanilla finish adds genuine character or merely novelty.
Manzanilla is worth pausing on. It's a bone-dry fino-style sherry matured exclusively in the coastal bodegas of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the flor yeast imparts a distinctive saline, almost briny quality you simply don't get from standard sherry casks. It's a clever choice for a finishing cask — far less predictable than your usual oloroso or PX, and it signals that whoever assembled this bottle was thinking beyond the obvious.
What to Expect
At 42% ABV, this sits at a gentle, approachable strength — perhaps a touch conservative for a whisky at this price point, where I might have liked to see 46% without chill filtration. That said, the Manzanilla influence should bring a drier, more mineral profile than most sherry-finished malts, which tend to lean heavily on dried fruit and Christmas cake sweetness. Expect something lighter on its feet, with a coastal edge and a finish that plays in savoury rather than sweet territory. The world blended malt base gives the blenders a broad palette to work with, and Mars have shown with previous Cosmo releases that they can create harmony from disparity.
The Verdict
I'm giving this a 7.6 out of 10, and I mean that as genuine praise. This is a whisky that takes a real creative swing with its cask selection. Manzanilla finishes remain rare in the whisky world — most distillers default to the richer, more crowd-pleasing sherry styles — and I respect the decision to go somewhere less charted. The NAS designation and 42% bottling strength hold it back slightly; at this price, transparency on age and a higher proof would have pushed it comfortably into the eights. But as a drinking experience, the Mars Cosmo Manzanilla delivers something genuinely different, and in a market saturated with identikit sherry bombs, different counts for a great deal.
Best Served
I'd take this neat at first, letting it open for five minutes in the glass before adding a few drops of cool water. The Manzanilla character should unfurl nicely with a little dilution. If you're feeling adventurous, this would also make a superb Highball — the dry, saline quality of the Manzanilla finish should pair brilliantly with good soda water and a strip of lemon peel. It's one of those rare whiskies that might actually improve with carbonation.
