Diplomático Mantuano occupies an interesting position in the Venezuelan distillery's range. Sitting below the famous Reserva Exclusiva but above the entry-level Planas, it is designed to be both a sipping rum and a cocktail backbone — a dual-purpose spirit that manages to excel at both without compromising on either.

Distilled from a blend of column still and pot still rums aged up to eight years in ex-bourbon casks, Mantuano carries the hallmarks of the Diplomático house style: richness, sweetness, and a lush tropical character. But where the Reserva Exclusiva can sometimes veer towards dessert territory, Mantuano maintains a drier, more balanced profile that makes it remarkably versatile.

On the Nose

The nose opens with warm toffee and brown sugar, immediately inviting. Behind this sweetness sits a layer of dried fruit — raisins and stewed plum — alongside a gentle oakiness that speaks of well-managed cask ageing. There is a faint whiff of banana and a whisper of vanilla that rounds out a nose of genuine warmth and approachability.

The Palate

On the palate, Mantuano delivers a smooth, medium-bodied experience. Caramel and molasses lead the charge, but they are quickly joined by notes of dark chocolate and coffee that add depth and prevent the sweetness from becoming one-dimensional. The oak influence is subtle but present — a gentle tannic grip that provides structure. Mid-palate, tropical fruit emerges: banana and a hint of mango that brightens the spirit considerably.

The Finish

The finish is medium in length, warm and gently sweet with lingering toffee and a pleasant spiciness from the oak. A touch of cinnamon appears right at the end, adding a final flourish of complexity. It fades gracefully, leaving the palate clean and satisfied.

In a Mai Tai, Mantuano is superb — its richness and tropical character harmonise beautifully with orgeat and lime. Neat, with a single ice cube, it is equally rewarding. At its price point, this is one of the finest aged rums available, and an essential bottle for anyone building a rum collection.
