Neisson is one of the last family-owned distilleries on Martinique, nestled at the foot of Mont Pelée on the island's northern coast. L'Esprit — meaning "the spirit" — is their aged expression, and it represents rhum agricole at its most refined: fresh sugarcane juice distilled on copper Creole columns, then aged in French Limousin oak for a minimum of four years.

What makes Neisson distinctive among Martinique producers is the estate's terroir. The volcanic soil, the proximity to the sea, the specific microclimate of the Carbet Valley — all of these contribute to a sugarcane character that is uniquely Neisson. L'Esprit captures this sense of place with remarkable clarity.

On the Nose

The nose is alive with fresh sugarcane — grassy, green, and vibrant — even after years in oak. This is the hallmark of great agricole: the cask ageing complements rather than obscures the raw material. Behind the sugarcane freshness, there are notes of vanilla and honey from the oak, alongside tropical fruit — overripe banana and a hint of mango. A gentle floral quality, like hibiscus, adds an exotic lift.

The Palate

On the palate, L'Esprit is simultaneously robust and elegant. The sugarcane character is front and centre — a vegetal, slightly peppery quality that is distinctly agricole. Oak ageing has added layers of vanilla, butterscotch, and a gentle tannic dryness, but these never dominate. Mid-palate, there is a beautiful interplay between the sweetness of the cane and the spiciness of the wood: cinnamon, nutmeg, and a whisper of clove. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a pleasing oiliness.

The Finish

The finish is long and complex — sugarcane grassiness, oak spice, and a lingering tropical sweetness that refuses to fade. There is a mineral quality in the very last moments, perhaps a gift from those volcanic soils, that adds a final dimension of interest.

Neisson L'Esprit is best enjoyed neat or on the rocks, where its agricole character can express itself fully. It is a rum that speaks eloquently of its origins, and a compelling argument for the singular beauty of Martinique rhum.
