Lemon Hart takes its name from Lehman Hart, a Jewish immigrant who established himself as a rum merchant in Penzance, Cornwall, in the late eighteenth century. By 1804, his firm was supplying rum to the Royal Navy — a contract that would define the brand for the next two centuries. The Original expression is a blend of Demerara rums from Guyana, aged and blended to a specification that has changed remarkably little since the Victorian era.

The rum is a blend of pot still and column still distillates from the Diamond Distillery in Guyana, aged in oak before blending and bottling at 40% ABV. Like many dark rums, it uses caramel for colour consistency, giving it the deep, mahogany hue that has been the brand's signature for generations.

On the Nose

The nose is rich and traditional. Dark treacle and molasses dominate, thick and inviting, with a burnt sugar quality that speaks to the Demerara heritage. There is dark fruit — prune and raisin — alongside coffee and a hint of dark chocolate. Oak provides vanilla and a gentle warmth, while allspice and clove add a subtle spice complexity. This is a nose that feels quintessentially British — the kind of rum that warmed officers on the quarterdeck.

The Palate

On the palate, Lemon Hart Original is solid and dependable. The molasses richness provides the foundation — thick, sweet, and comforting. Brown sugar and treacle are joined by dark fruit and a coffee bitterness that prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying. The oak is present but not dominant, adding vanilla and a gentle tannin. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and smooth, with the 40% ABV providing warmth without aggression. There is a touch of black pepper on the mid-palate that adds interest.

The Finish

The finish is medium, with molasses and coffee lingering alongside a gentle oak dryness. The dark fruit fades slowly, and there is a final note of allspice that provides a spiced, warming conclusion.

Lemon Hart Original is a versatile dark rum that performs well in multiple contexts. In a Dark and Stormy, it provides the rich molasses backbone that the cocktail demands. In baking — rum cakes, truffles, trifle — it adds genuine depth of flavour. Neat, it is an honest, unpretentious sipper that delivers exactly what the label promises. Two centuries of heritage count for something, and Lemon Hart wears that heritage well.
