Worthy Park has been a working sugar estate in the Lluidas Vale of Jamaica since 1670, making it one of the oldest continuously operating agricultural properties in the Caribbean. Rum has been distilled here for almost as long, but it is only in recent decades that the estate has begun bottling and marketing its own expressions rather than selling bulk rum to blenders. The Single Estate Reserve is the flagship: a blend of pot still rums aged for a minimum of six to ten years on the estate, bottled without additives at 45% ABV.

Everything at Worthy Park is vertically integrated — the estate grows its own sugarcane, produces its own molasses, distils its own rum, and ages it in its own warehouses. This level of control, from field to bottle, is vanishingly rare in the rum world and gives Worthy Park a legitimate claim to the terroir-driven approach more commonly associated with fine wine.

On the Nose

The nose announces its Jamaican provenance immediately. The characteristic pot still funk is present — overripe banana, tropical fruit, and a distinctive estery quality — but it is framed by oak-derived elegance. Vanilla and caramel provide sweetness, while cinnamon, allspice, and a hint of black pepper add warmth. There is a deeper note of molasses and brown sugar, earthy and rich, that speaks to the estate's sugar-making heritage. The overall nose is complex and inviting.

The Palate

On the palate, Worthy Park delivers the robust Jamaican character that enthusiasts crave. The pot still richness is unmistakable — a fruity, funky quality that coats the tongue with concentrated flavour. Mango, banana, and a hint of pineapple provide tropical sweetness, while the oak contributes vanilla, coconut, and a firm tannin structure. There is a savoury quality — almost meaty — that sets Jamaican pot still rum apart from all other styles. The 45% ABV provides excellent body without excessive heat.

The Finish

The finish is long and satisfying. The tropical fruit gives way slowly to drier notes of oak, tobacco, and a lingering allspice warmth. The molasses sweetness returns at the very end, providing a rich, satisfying conclusion. There is genuine complexity in the finish — it evolves and shifts, rewarding patience.

Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve is an outstanding Jamaican rum that combines the island's characteristic pot still intensity with the refinement that careful ageing provides. Neat, it is a compelling sipper; in a Mai Tai, it is spectacular — the funky fruitiness playing beautifully against orgeat and lime. For anyone seeking to understand what makes Jamaican rum unique, this bottle is an essential starting point.
