Detente is a blend of pot still and column still rums aged for a minimum of ten years, first in ex-bourbon barrels and then finished in ex-port casks. It is bottled at cask strength with no added sugar, colour, or flavouring — a philosophy that Seale defends with an almost evangelical fervour and that has earned Foursquare a devoted global following.
On the Nose
The nose is spectacular. Rich dark chocolate and espresso form the foundation, layered with dried fruit — fig, date, and raisin — that speaks to the port cask influence. Behind these deeper notes, there is vanilla, toasted coconut, and a beautifully integrated oak character. A hint of tobacco leaf and leather adds a savoury complexity that elevates the nose from excellent to exceptional. Despite the cask strength, there is no alcohol burn — just pure, concentrated flavour.
The Palate
On the palate, Detente is magnificent. The entry is rich and full-bodied — dark chocolate, toffee, and molasses — with the port cask adding a subtle vinous sweetness and a hint of dark berry fruit. The oak is assertive but perfectly balanced, providing structure and a gentle tannic grip without ever becoming astringent. Mid-palate, waves of flavour emerge: butterscotch, dried tropical fruit, cinnamon, and allspice. The mouthfeel is thick and luxurious, coating the palate with layer upon layer of complexity.
The Finish
The finish is extraordinarily long — measured in minutes rather than seconds. Dark chocolate and espresso linger, joined by a warming spice that builds slowly and a final note of dried fruit sweetness. It is the kind of finish that makes you sit in silence, reluctant to take another sip because the current one has not yet finished revealing itself.
