On the Nose
The nose is dominated by tart green apple — immediate, bright, and unambiguous. Behind the apple, there is vanilla, cinnamon, and a faint molasses sweetness from the rum base. A hint of caramel apple emerges with time in the glass, like a toffee apple at a fairground. It is simple but effective — this rum knows what it wants to be.
The Palate
On the palate, the apple character is front and centre — sweet and tart, with a slightly candied quality. The spice notes provide a warming backdrop: cinnamon is most prominent, joined by vanilla and a touch of nutmeg. The rum base contributes a gentle molasses sweetness that anchors the fruit flavour. The mouthfeel is medium-light, smooth and easy-drinking. At 35% ABV, there is virtually no alcohol burn.
The Finish
The finish is short — apple, cinnamon, and vanilla fading quickly. There is a pleasant sweetness that lingers, but little complexity to contemplate. The rum achieves exactly what it sets out to: a fun, flavourful spirit for mixing.
Mixed with ginger ale over ice, Savage Apple is genuinely enjoyable — the apple and ginger combination works beautifully. As a component in autumnal cocktails, it has real potential. As a sipping rum, it lacks the depth and complexity to reward serious attention. But that is not what it is for, and judged on its own terms, it delivers.
